The Annual Día de los Muertos Fundraiser is the main fundraiser for the Vecinos Scholarship Fund.
Last year’s fundraiser contributed to the Vecinos Annual Student Scholarship Fund, which gave away $10,000 in scholarships to South Pasadena students. This year’s fundraiser is expected to surpass last year’s. In addition to the scholarships, the fundraiser also has provided support for several educational and cultural events including last year's Vecinos y Amigos Career and Art Fair and the SPHS team trip to the Academic Decathlon in Sacramento.
The event also commemorates Día de los Muertos, a holiday that is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November primarily in Mexico but also in different Latin American countries. The holiday is meant to honor deceased family members, friends, pets and any other loved-ones. Traditionally, candles, marigold flowers (cempazuchitl), sweet breads, spirits, and other items related to the dearly departed are displayed in deference to their everlasting memory.
